  1. 1890-1918. English poet of the World War I
  2. period. Trained as an artist at the Slade
  3. school in London, Rosenberg enlisted in the
  4. British army 1915. He wrote about the horror
  5. of life on the front line, as in `Break of
  6. Day in the Trenches'. Like that of his
  7. contemporary Wilfred Owen, Rosenberg's work
  8. is now ranked with the finest World War I
  9. poems, although he was largely unpublished
  10. during his lifetime. After serving for 20
  11. months in the front line, he was killed on
  12. the Somme.
